‘the sexual impulse is a force of destruction;
destruction is a part of nature’

this was the unifying premise behind our production of la tragédie de carmen. on a visual level, I worked with projection/set designer yuki izumihara and costume/set designer adam alonso to use the ‘striation’ as a unifying motif. striations are nature’s evidence of traumatic growth — whether in the lines of rocks after a tectonic shift, or the hips of a woman’s body after childbirth. as carmen forges the path of destruction through her world, she has a phenomenal relationship with nature; as changes occur in carmen, they reflect in her environs synchronistically.
