after a close reading of susan mcclary’s feminist analysis “georges bizet: carmen”, i was inspired to find a dramatic premise that decentralized don josé as the protagonist, while preserving the joyful psychosis of propser mérimée’s original tale from 1845. what emerged was a meditation on the sexual impulse as a force of destruction. the character of lillas pastia was embodied as a latex-clad drag queen.
